On the centenary of the birth of Robert Rauschenberg (Port Arthur, 1925 – Captiva Island, 2008), the Museo del Novecento in Milan presents an exceptional exhibition project that builds a bridge for the first time between the works of this fundamental protagonist of the history of art and some of the most significant masterpieces hosted within the museum's collections, weaving a plot between the innovative vision of the American artist and the rich fabric of twentieth-century Italian art.

A central figure in the transition from modern to contemporary art, Rauschenberg has always demonstrated an insatiable curiosity and a deep commitment to collaboration and the exchange of ideas. At the Museo del Novecento these aspects are emphasised by the desire to connect and dialogue, sometimes in a deliberately anachronistic manner, his research and that of artists belonging to the main artistic movements that marked the Italian twentieth century, from Futurism to Arte Povera.

Through overlapping visions, materials and artistic intentions, his works interact with the Museum's collections, establishing direct references, formal or thematic affinities. The result is a path that reflects the bold experimentations of artists who, like Rauschenberg, have invented new languages, challenging materials and revolutionising the conventions of painting and sculpture.
