In Donald Judd’s Untitled (1991), a finely crafted anodised aluminium box engages viewers at eye level, allowing them a glimpse into its colourful interior. An artist who sought ‘the simple expression of complex thought’, he reduced his art to its most essential components, through a purity of form, material and colour. Deceptively simple in its form, the interaction between the contrasting materials – matte aluminium framing a polished Plexiglas surface – produces a complex perceptual experience that changes according to the viewer’s vantage point and the ambient light.
