Pablo Picasso remained in his Parisian studio during the Second World War, documenting the chaos and contradictions of day-to-day life invaded by tyranny. His portraiture and still-life paintings channeled the surrounding destructive energies into classical themes from art history. Now, Tom Sachs dives into Picasso’s war years using his own style of painting to reimagine works like Seated Woman (1938). Sachs also pairs Picasso’s work with that of his rival Marcel Duchamp to show contrasts in style.—Clara Molot
