타데우스 로팍 서울은 개관 이후 두 번째 전시로 미국 작가 알렉스 카츠의 개인전 ⟪Flowers⟫를 개최한다. 지난 20년간 작가가 작업해 온 꽃 시리즈 중 이전에 소개된 적 없던 작품들 뿐만 아니라 자연을 배경으로 한 초상화까지 아우르는 이번 전시는 한 장르의 작품만을 집중적으로 조명하는 아시아에서의 첫 번째 전시라는 의의를 지닌다. 롯데뮤지엄(2018)과 대구미술관(2019)에서 개최되었던 개인전을 잇는 ⟪Flowers⟫는 2022년 뉴욕의 솔로몬 R. 구겐하임 미술관에서 예정된 알렉스 카츠의 대규모 회고전에 앞서 작가의 작업 세계를 조망해 볼 수 있는 기회를 제공한다.
The second exhibition at Thaddaeus Ropac Seoul centres around the major theme of flower paintings by American artist Alex Katz and will include previously unseen works from the artist’s flower series as well as new portraits, whose subjects are depicted in botanical settings. It is the first exhibition in Asia entirely dedicated to the genre, following Katz’s major exhibitions at the Lotte Museum of Art, Seoul (2018), Daegu Art Museum, Daegu (2019) and Fosun Foundation, Shanghai (2020).

1950년대, 카츠가 활동을 시작할 무렵의 뉴욕 미술계는 추상표현주의가 주류를 차지하고 있었다. 이러한 파고 속에서 작가는 그만의 고유한 붓놀림과 화면 구성력, 그리고 단순화된 색면이 돋보이는 그만의 작업세계를 구축하였다. 실물보다 크게 그려진 꽃은 조용하지만 강렬한 아름다움을 자아내며 화면 속으로 관람객을 끌어들인다.
Katz depicts the flowers in the carefully composed strokes and planes of flat colour that are characteristic of his unique style, which he developed during the 1950s in New York – a time in which the art scene was dominated by Abstract Expressionist painters. Painted larger than life, the flowers exude a quiet but powerful beauty, fully immersing the viewer.
카츠의 말에 따르면, 꽃 회화는 작가가 1960년대에 걸쳐 작업했던 단체 초상화와 관련이 있다. 각자의 시간에 따라 피어나는 꽃들은 작가가 단체 초상화에서는 미처 표현하지 못했던 정적인 화면 내에서의 운동감을 연구하고 구현할 수 있게 하였다. 이러한 작가의 연구는 작가의 초기작 ⟨금잔화⟩(2001)에서 잘 나타난다. 풀 밭에 흩어져 있는–각각 약간씩 다르게 표현된–꽃들은 자연의 움직임에 대한 순간적인 인상을 전달한다.
According to Katz, his flower compositions are related to the cocktail party scenes he was painting at the time. Flowers in varying stages of bloom allowed him to give a static scene the sense of movement that he was looking to bring to his group portraits. This becomes apparent in Marigolds (2001), the earliest painting in the exhibition, where individual flowers are scattered over the grass – each slightly different to the others – giving a fleeting impression of nature in movement.

In his most recent works, Katz uses more shading, giving the flowers a sculptural presence that is, in his words, ‘more descriptive of volume’.

카츠는 먼저 칠한 물감이 마르기 전에 다음 획을 더하는 ‘웻 온 웻(wet-on-wet)’ 기법을 활용하여 신속하게 작업한다. 작가의 전매특허인 이 기법은 작품에 즉각성이라는 요소를 더하고, 미술사학자 이진명의 표현처럼 ‘물감의 높이가 완벽하게 균등한 마술'을 구현한다.
The works were created using a wet-on-wet technique, in which the last stroke of paint is applied before the first one has had time to dry. This lends his paintings a sense of immediacy, which art critic Lee Jin-myung describes as ‘the magic of the absolutely flat application of colour’.
그는 프랑스 인상주의 작가들의 방식대로 꽃에 밝은 색상을 부여하는 빛과 대기를 자연에서 직접 포착하며 작업한다. 이렇듯 자연에서 제작된 연구작들은 이후 작가의 스튜디오에서 큰 캔버스의 작품으로 재탄생한다.
Katz works in nature, in the manner of the French Impressionists, allowing him to directly capture the light and atmosphere that lend the flowers their bright colours. The quickly painted studies he creates outdoors are then transferred onto larger canvases in his studio.
카츠의 신작 초상화의 인물들은 녹색 배경에 배치되어 있는데, 이는 꽃 회화들과 함께 전시되며 마치 메인 주에 있는 그의 정원을 산책하는 듯한 느낌을 선사한다. 또한, 이중 초상화로 구성된 작품들은 윙크 또는 옅은 미소를 띤 인물이 미묘하게 연결되며 움직이는 듯한 인상을 자아낸다.
In his new portraits, Katz places the figures against backgrounds of greenery that evoke a similar atmosphere to that of the flower paintings: a summer stroll through his garden in Maine. The format of the double portrait shows the connection between the depiction of flowers and people, with a wink or slight smile creating a subtle impression of movement.
과감한 화면 구성 방식을 통해 마치 클로즈업을 한 듯한 영화적 효과를 일으키는 카츠의 작품은 조용하지만 강렬한 아름다움을 자아내며 작가가 말하고자 하는 ‘즉각적인 현재'에 관람객을 몰입시킨다. 추상적이지도, 현실적이지도 않은 그의 작품은 삶 속에 표류하는 작은 부분에 초점을 맞추며, 작품의 서사보다는 순수한 지각에 기인하여 시적이고 추상적인 사고를 유도한다.
Framed as cinematic close-ups, Katz’s works have a striking feeling of immediacy. Neither abstract nor realistic, they immerse viewers in a small, unmoored slice of life.
