For his first solo exhibition in an Italian museum, the artist has made the radical choice of focusing exclusively on his installations made up of letters and words. The fourteen works that were realised specially for this exhibition and never before exhibited in Italy, form a single body of work and put forward a conceptual rather than figurative visual identity for Pierson. This series, entitled Word Sculptures and begun in 1991, features abandoned objects, repurposed from old signs from cinemas, supermarkets, casinos and advertisements found in abandoned factories. Throughout the series, the artist puts together sentences and simple words that allow for a multiplicity of meaning and bring up personal images for the spectator. Their appearance is anchored in the Pop culture of the 1960s and the use of discarded, everyday objects evokes the work of great artists such as Rauschenberg or Warhol.
