The two figures in X-ray lila (2020) form an abstracted double portrait of Georg Baselitz and his wife, Elke, who has been a constant presence in his imagery since the first upside-down portrait he painted of her in 1969. The Elke paintings constitute the largest single group of his portraits, in which the artist engages in the struggle of representation, the inescapability of subjectivity, and the representation of the self through a significant other. The two spectral figures emerge from the dark background – appearing, as the title suggests, like an X-ray image in which both bodies are reduced to their schematics.
