New Orleans Drizzle (Borealis) (1989) is from one of Robert Rauschenberg’s most experimental and innovative series, created by silkscreening a photograph he took in Japan in 1982 onto a sheet of brass. The titular ‘drizzle’ is represented by streaks of tarnishing agent, which run down the metal plate like raindrops, as well as larger smears that form dark puddles on the surface. He had a keen eye for the formal qualities in everyday scenes, such as the white refuse sacks arranged in a row and the geometric rigour of the pipes that lead the eye horizontally across the image. With their subtly reflective surfaces, the Borealis works change according to one’s viewpoint, alluding to the ever-shifting landscape of modernity.
