Sturtevant Estate Luogo E Segni
Palazzo Grassi
Punta Della Dogana
Venice
Sturtevant is part of the group exhibition ‘Luogo e Segni’ at Palazzo Grassi, Punta della Dogana in Venice.
‘Luogo e Segni’, curated by Martin Bethenod, Director of Palazzo Grassi – Punta della Dogana, and Mouna Mekouar, independent curator, takes its title from a painting by Carol Rama included in the exhibition. The show brings together over one hundred works, by thirty-six artists, that establish a particular relationship with their urban, social, political, historical, intellectual setting.
The American artist Sturtevant (1924, Lakewood, Ohio – 2014, Paris) is best known for her repetitions of the works of other artists, which she recreated manually from memory after having seen a piece that intrigued her. These can immediately be identified with the original, but they are not copies. Her aim was not to achieve an exact replica, but rather to address notions of authorship, authenticity and originality that would later come to the fore in our own digital age, characterised by the endless circulation and recombination of images.
Concurrent with the #LaBiennalediVenezia it runs until 15 December 2019
