Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac : Ely House, London

Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac will open a gallery in Ely House in Mayfair, London, in Spring 2017.

Considered one of the finest eighteenth-century mansions in London, Ely House was built in 1772 by Sir Robert Taylor. 37 Dover Street was named Ely House when it was commissioned by Bishop Edmond Keene of Ely to be his London residence. It remained an episcopal home until the early twentieth century when it was extensively remodelled in 1909 for its use as the Albemarle Club by the respected Arts & Crafts architectural firm Smith and Brewer.

The gallery will be led by Polly Robinson Gaer. Spread over five floors and over 1,500 m2 (16,000 ft2), it will benefit from four distinct gallery spaces. Situated at 37 Dover Street, the ground floor also includes an additional exhibition space in the adjunct building overlooking Berkeley Street. New York-based architect Annabelle Selldorf will sensitively renovate the listed building.
