Since the late 1980s, the French-trained Chinese painter Yan Pei-Ming has been exploring social and political themes as well as his own existentialism in bold brushstrokes and monumental large formats. Starting with his self-exploration as an artist in the form of self-portraits and family portraits, the Francisco Carolinum shows a round trip through the central themes of his artistic work - contemporary contextualized supra-temporal themes such as hope and courage, death and suffering, the critical iconization of lordly and pop-cultural personalities, or the examination of central works of European art history.
