Thaddaeus Ropac London
Ely House, 37 Dover Street, W1S 4NJ

Please join us for a live Q&A with Adrian Ghenie and Nicholas Cullinan, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, to mark the publication of the catalogue for the artist’s solo exhibition, The Fear of NOW (on view until 10 January).

Building upon their interview specially commissioned for the catalogue, the pair will discuss the key themes of the exhibition, as well as the marked developments in Ghenie’s practice evidenced in this new body of work.

Adrian Ghenie bridges abstraction and figuration as he fuses diverse source imagery in his idiosyncratic painterly language. Romanian-born and now living and working in Berlin, he represented Romania at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015. He has had recent solo exhibitions at Thaddaeus Ropac London (2022); Galerie Judin Berlin (2021); Tim Van Laere Gallery, Antwerp (2020); the State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg (2019); and Palazzo Cini, Venice (2019). His work has been included in group exhibitions at major institutions including the Centre Pompidou, Paris (2016); Fondation Vincent van Gogh, Arles (2016); San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2012); Palazzo Grassi (2011); and Tate Liverpool (2008), and is held in the collections of the Centre Pompidou, Paris; Tate, London, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and Long Museum, Shanghai. In 2022, two site-specific paintings by the artist were permanently installed in the historic setting of Chiesa della Madonna della Mazza, Palermo, in an independent project curated by Alessandra Borghese.

Dr Nicholas Cullinan has been Director of the National Portrait Gallery
since 2015, overseeing a £35.5m transformation of the Gallery with
architect Jamie Fobert. Prior to this, he was Curator of Modern and
Contemporary Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. From
2007-13, he was Curator of International Modern Art at Tate Modern, where he co-curated Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs with Sir Nicholas Serota in 2014. He received his BA, MA and PhD in art history from the Courtauld Institute of Art, London and in 2006-7 held the Hilla Rebay International Fellowship at the Guggenheim museums in Bilbao, New York and Venice.
