In 2 COUPLES 1 SINGLE (2015) Miquel Barceló draws upon the underwater world of his native Mallorca – the largest of the Balearic Islands located in the Mediterranean and part of Spain – which serves as a key motif in his oeuvre. Against an atmospheric blue haze, black and white skulls of animals with dark, hollow eyes appear in relief. Their forms are defined by volume and colour, rather than line, to evoke the experience of glimpsing a sea creature indistinctly through water. The artist has dived to catch octopus, squid and fish since childhood, and has often compared the act of painting to the experience of being underwater: ‘For me, diving is very close to painting. To float in space, you are parallel [...] And sometimes we are underwater for more than two minutes; we are still.’
A solo exhibition of new work by the artist, Grisailles, is currently on view at Thaddaeus Ropac, Paris Pantin until 7 January 2023.
