I like seeing people use materials that one’s not accustomed to seeing in art. That has a particular value. New materials have fresh associations, physical properties and qualities that have built into them the possibility of forcing you or helping you do something else.

– Robert Rauschenberg

This exhibition presents a group of important metal works belonging to Robert Rauschenberg's Copperhead series, created by the artist in 1985 and 1989. This significant body of paintings executed on copper supports originated with a group of 12 Copperhead-Bites, eight of which are shown together for the first time since they were created and exhibited in 1985.

The first of Rauschenberg’s 15 metal series, the Copperhead-Bites mark the artist’s early experimentation with creating images directly on sheets of metal using silkscreen printing techniques, acrylic paint, enamel and tarnishing agents. The technical innovation achieved through the fabrication of these works is foregrounded in the double-meaning of the title of the series: it references both the venomous bite of the snake native to North America and the oxidising effect of the chemicals on the copper supports. As the artist explained, ‘the images were the bite on the copper.’

The Copperhead-Bites were produced as part of the Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange (ROCI) project, designed to foster international collaboration through artmaking. Between 1984 and 1991, Rauschenberg travelled to ten countries outside of the United States with the intention of accruing knowledge about the artistic practices of different cultures. The techniques and materials he encountered informed new bodies of work that were presented in touring ROCI exhibitions held in the host countries.

Rauschenberg first began working with copper following his ROCI research trip to Chile in November 1984. He learnt of the significance of the material to the country’s economy when he visited a copper mine and foundry near Antofagasta. He also learned how to apply tarnishing agents to copper from a local artist to create luminous tonal ranges. The experiences inspired him to experiment with creating images on flat copper sheets when he returned to his studio in Captiva, Florida. Here, he produced the 12 Copperhead-Bites for the exhibition Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange: ROCI CHILE presented at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Santiago in 1985.

… while the artist has long been interested in reflective materials and objects, it may be that Rauschenberg’s pervasive blending of complicated painted images on polished screenlike metals is the most important technical and visual development of ROCI… the artist and his collaborators constantly experimented with poured acrylic and enamel paints that were then heated to force a bonding on colored, galvanized, or stainless steel, shiny copper, and mirrored or anodized aluminium.

The Copperhead-Bites are populated with silkscreened images of everyday life in Chile which Rauschenberg captured in his black-and-white photographs taken during the ROCI research trip in November 1984. They feature cobbled streets, road signs, shop fronts, the facades of buildings, animals and, an enduring subject in the artist’s oeuvre, birds. Tarnishes, washed across the copper sheets, disrupt the reflective surface of the metal in painterly splashes of discolouration, juxtaposing hand-painted elements with the mediated process of silkscreening.

In Copperhead-Bite VI / ROCI CHILE (1985) images of tightly packed pebbles and the cracked earth of the Atacama Desert serve as a textured background for Rauschenberg’s photograph of a Chilean heron - a bird he described as ‘so grand. It seemed like they could survive anywhere and that their spirit would never be broken.’

Underneath the heron, the copper support features a silkscreen of Rebecca Matte’s marble sculpture L’Enchantement (better known as El Eco, 1900). Now held in the  collection of the Museo Nacional Bellas Artes, Santiago, Rauschenberg captured the work in Parque Forestal, an urban park in Santiago. Matte’s sculpture is juxtaposed with a loosely rendered graffiti figure or child’s drawing of a woman, establishing a relationship between the two images. The composition asserts the humour that Rauschenberg weaves through his approach to artmaking, as well as his penchant for incorporating the product of other artists’ (or individuals’) hands in his own work.

The uniform vertical format and exclusive use of photographic imagery from Chile distinguishes the Copperhead-Bites from the wider Copperhead series. The latter demonstrates how Rauschenberg continued to play with the scale and format of his copper paintings following the ROCI CHILE exhibition. Hawk-Eyed (Copperhead) (1989) was one of the artist’s favourite pieces from his entire oeuvre and the prominent image of the chicken relates to earlier freestanding Combines (1954-64) which feature real taxidermied fowl and roosters.

The multipart Cousins (1989) is a rare work on metal to feature multiple, unattached panels. Two of its three copper components are printed with, respectively, a field of sunflowers in red silkscreen ink and an image of waves splashing against a wooden pallet in blue. The title holds the interrelated images of land and sea in a relationship of kinship, despite their physical separation. In turn, a copper object suspended from the left silkscreened panel demonstrates Rauschenberg’s sustained interest in assemblage, as epitomised by his iconic Combines and the found metal incorporated in his sculptural Glut series (1986-89/1991-94), the latter created simultaneously with his later Copperhead works.

A selection of Rauschenberg’s Chile photographs are presented alongside the copper paintings, evidencing the interrelated nature of different components of his practice. Characterised by their striking subject-matter and dynamic compositions, these photographs stand as autonomous works that demonstrate the artist’s skilful understanding of the medium. Rauschenberg first experimented with photography while studying under Hazel Larsen Archer at Black Mountain College in North Carolina. The artist was particularly interested in capturing aspects of everyday life - an impetus represented by his unrealised project to photograph the entirety of the United States ‘inch by inch’. Daunted by the scale of the project, he soon turned to painting. However, the camera remained a vital tool within his practice.

This photograph depicts the front of a newsstand from the street, its composition structured by the repeated rows of magazines which imbue the image with a rhythmic quality. The faces of celebrities, including Michael Jackson and beauty models, stare out from the covers. They are echoed by the face of the seller who peers out from the square nook created amongst the publications at the heart of the photograph. The gazes of the figures - both printed and physical - confront the viewer, perhaps prompting them to reconsider their relationship to the everyday scene. Fascinated by the minutiae of daily life, Rauschenberg said, ‘I really feel sorry for people who think things like soap dishes or mirrors or Coke bottles are ugly because they’re surrounded by things like that all day long, and it must make them miserable.’
