남아프리카 공화국에서 태어나 런던을 기반으로 활동 중인 리사 브라이스는 구상회화 작업을 통해 서양 미술사에서 보여주었던 전통적인 여성의 표상을 재고한다. 브라이스의 시그니처인 코발드 블루 색상으로 그려진 여성 누드는 여성을 남성적 욕망의 수동적인 대상으로서 무력화하려는 남성의 시선(male gaze)에 반문을 제기한다. 브라이스의 단신상과 군상에 등장하는 여성은 작품의 모델이자 뮤즈의 역할에서 해방된다. 또한 이 여성들은 교대로 붓을 들고 본인 혹은 함께 등장하는 인물을 그리거나, 거울 앞에서 포즈를 취하기도 하며 문에 기대어 담배를 피우며 예술가와 작품의 대상/모델 사이의 위계 구분을 해체하기에 이른다. 브라이스의 여성 인물은 관람객을 정면으로 마주보거나 관람객의 존재를 모르는 듯 서있으며, 관람객이 아닌 본인의 욕망에 의해 움직이는 인물로 표현된다.
브라이스의 작품 속 인물과 설정은 잡지, 인터넷, 개인 사진, 그리고 무엇보다 미술사에서 수집한 다양한 이미지로 구성된 복합적인 결과물이다. 작가는 “모든 회화는 하나의 계보로, 이전에 창조되었던 것과의 대화이다”라고 설명한다. 브라이스의 작품에서 드가, 마네, 피카소, 발로통을 포함한 유럽 남성 작가의 작품의 주요 요소가 반영되고 재해석되지만, 결정적으로 작가는 서양 미술사의 남성 거장들에게 대응할 뿐 아니라, 그동안 인정받지 못한 여성 작가의 작품 계보를 회복시킨다. 미국 추상표현주의자 헬렌 플랑켄탈러가 캔버스에 코발트 블루 색상의 물감을 붓는 모습을 보여주고, 네덜란드 화가 찰리 투롭과 쿠사마 야요이의 이미지가 자화상으로 융합되며, 1905-6년 피카소가 그린 거트루드 스타인을 발로통의 <The White and the Black >(1913) 작품 속 앉아 있는 여성 옆에 두어, 여성 문화계 인사들의 세대 간 대화를 이끈다. 활동 초반 남아프리카 공화국 출신 수 윌리엄슨의 판화 보조로 일한 브라이스는 반복적인 것에 관심을 갖게 되었고, 모네의 <올림피아>(1863) 속 검은색 고양이와 같은 도상이 ‘여성으로 구성된 작은 군대'를 그리는 작업에 자주 등장하게 된다.
물감 튜브에서 바로 짠 듯한 강렬한 코발트 블루는 브라이스의 작품을 이루는 중요한 색이자 이를 활용한 작업을 거듭하며 의미를 획득한다. 활동 초기 네온사인의 푸른 빛과 여명의 분위기를 담아내고자 사용하기 시작한 색으로, 1990년대 후반 포트오브스페인에 소재한 CCA7에서 레지던시 작가로 거주하며, 해당 섬에 애착을 갖게 되었고 트리니다드의 ‘푸른 악마’를 참고하게 되었다. ‘푸른 악마’란 자신의 몸을 파란색으로 페인트칠하거나 푸른 색 진흙으로 덮는 카니발 캐릭터 중 하나이다. 파란색 페인트는 전통적으로 레킷사에서 만든 블루파우더- 역사적으로 대영제국 전역에서 피부를 더 하얗게 만들기 위해 용도가 변경되어 만들어진 물질-를 사용했다. 이러한 문화적 관습과 이를 작품으로 융화하는 것은 작가에게 ‘본래의 피부 색을 가리고 인종에 따라 대상을 쉽게 혹은 전제적으로 보는 것을 차단’하는 방법이다.
브라이스는 케이프타운에 있는 미카엘리스 미술 대학(Michaelis School of Fine Art)에서 수학했으며, 런던으로 넘어와 기반을 잡고 1998년 가스웍 레지던시에 참여했다. 작가는1998년에는 그란데 리비에르에서 워크샵 참여를, 1999년에는 포트오브스페인에서 동료 예술가 크리스 오필리, 피터 도이그 그리고 엠헤요 바하바 (Emheyo Bahabba)와 함께 레지던시에 참여하며 트리니다드에서 오랜 기간 활동했다. 2020년에는 헤이그 KM21에서 개인전 《Smoke and Mirrors》을 선보였으며, 이어 2021년에는 런던 헤이워드 갤러리(Hayward Gallery, London)에서 열린 그룹전 《Mixing It Up: Painting Today》에 참여했다. 작가는 루이스 찰스턴 트러스트(Charleston Trust, Lewes, 2021)과 런던 테이트 브리튼(Tate Britain, London, 2018) 등 영국의 박물관과 공공 기관에서 개인전을 선보이기도 했다. 런던 화이트 채플 갤러리(Whitechapel Gallery, London 2022), 텍사스 포트워스 현대 미술관(Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas, 2022), 런던 테이트 브리튼(Tate, London, 2021), 런던 캠든 아트 센터(Camden Art Centre, 2016), 케이프 타운 남아프리카 공화국 국립 갤러리(South African National Gallery, Cape Town, 2016)에서 열리는 괄목할 그룹 전시에도 브라이스의 작품이 출품되었고 2019년 줄리아 페이튼-존스(Julia Peyton-Jones)와 작가 알바로 배링턴이 함께 기획한 타데우스 로팍 그룹전 《Artists I Steal From》에서도 전시되었다. 작가의 회화 작품은 런던 테이트 (Tate Britain, London), 맨체스터 휘트워스 미술관(Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester), 로스앤젤레스 해머 미술관 (Hammer Museum, Los Angeles), 샌프란시스코 현대미술관 (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art), 워싱턴 D.C의 스미소니언 국립 미술관 (Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, Washington, D.C.), 요하네스버그 미술관 (Johannesburg Art Gallery), 케이프 타운 남아프리카 공화국 국립 미술관 (Southern African National Gallery, Cape Town), 베이징 X 뮤지엄 (X Museum, Beijing) 등 주요 퍼블릭 컬렉션에서 포함된다.
