제이디 차는 디아스포라적 정체성, 세계 역사, 가족 안에서 전승되는 유산 그리고 다종 의사소통이라는 본질을 기반으로 광범위한 작업을 발전시켜왔다. 작가는 이러한 주제를 탐구하며 그림, 조각, 텍스타일, 사운드와 퍼포먼스 등 다양한 요소를 혼합해 몰입형 설치물은 제작하고 이를 통해 관람객의 감각적 경험을 이끌어낸다. 캐나다 벤쿠버에서 태어나 런던을 기반으로 활동하고 있는 작가는 한국의 전통을 활용하여, 서구와 점령국에 의해 지워지거나 억압된 이야기들을 조명한다. 작가에게 예술은 가면극이나 연극, 의상 및 스토리텔링를 통해 사회정치적 조건과 문화적 행동을 분석하는 하나의 방식이다. 작가는 댄서와 뮤지션들과 지속적인 교류를 통해 협업 작업을 진행하며, 2006년부터 예술가 베니토 마요르 발레호(Benito Mayor Vallejo)와 긴밀히 협업하고 있다.
심층적인 연구를 기반으로 작업을 진행하는 제이디는 예술과 공예의 역사에서부터 사변 소설, 대중 문화, 음악, 패션에 이르기까지 방대하고 포괄적인 레퍼런스에서 영감을 얻는다. 특히, 한국 민속과 신화는 작가의 다학제적 작업을 특징짓는 풍부한 시각적, 서사적 전통을 보여주고 작가의 프로젝트에서 작가가 자신과 다른 예술가 그리고 역사 속 타임라인을 연결하는 지점을 만들 수 있는 뼈대와 중추적인 역할을 한다. 작가는 한국의 샤머니즘과 같이 한국 전통에서 모계주의와 여성이 주도하는 관례를 강조한다. 이러한 다양한 레퍼런스는 작가의 회화, 의상 그리고 조각 작품에서 반복되는 전형적 모티프를 통해 깊이 있는 개인적인 신화를 구축하기 위한 자서전적인 틀을 통해 재구상된다. 제이디의 반려견인 페키니즈를 한국 민속에서 도덕적 시비를 판벽하는 동물 해태로 재해석하여 등장시키는 한편, 작가가 제주도에서 수집한 조개껍질은 이전에 다른 생물체의 몸을 수용했던 유기적인 구조물로써 이해하여 노마딕한 정체성의 상징으로 표현된다.
몇 년 동안, 작가의 작업에서 다양한 텍스타일 작품이 중심적으로 다루어지게 되었고, 작가는 공연에서 의상과 코스튬을 착용하고 단독 작품으로 선보이기도 했다. 나아가, 작가의 회화 작품에는 ‘보자기’와 같은 한국 전통의 조각보 기법을 활용한 다양한 색상의 패치워크 프레임으로 둘러 완성되었다. 캐나다에서 성장한 작가에게 익숙한 패션 트렌드와 더불어 한국 전통 의상과 기법에서 영감을 받은 일련의 의상들은 자신을 표현하는 패션의 역할을 수행하면서도 작가의 디아스포라적 정체성에 대한 탐구를 구체화한다. 작가는 ‘옷은 당신이 누구인지를 바꿀 수 있게 한다’라고 말하며, ‘옷은 특별한 날, 당신이 세상에 보여지고 싶은 사람으로 만들어준다’고 덧붙인다. 작가는 의상을 만들 때, ‘마법과 형태를 바꾸는 방법, 디아스포라가 되어보는 방법, 혹은 정체성 정치를 경험한 모든 사람들 즉, 외적인 모습과 자아를 변하게하는 방법’에 관하여 생각한다.
제이디 차는 에밀리카 대학에서 2007년 학사학위와 2014년 런던왕립예술대학에서 회화전공으로 석사학위를 받았다. 2022년에는 런던 화이트채플 갤러리에서 최대 규모의 개인전 《House Gods, Animal Guides and Five Ways 2 Forgiveness》(2022-23)을 선보였다. 이외에도 플리머스 더 박스(The Box, Plymouth, 2022), 리즈 미술관(Leeds Art Gallery, Leeds, 2021). 새스커툰 르메이 모던(Remai Modern, Saskatoon, 2020), 벡스힐 드 라워 파빌리온(De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea, 2019), 글라스고 트램웨이(Tramway, Glasglow, 2019), 바쿠 야라트 현대미술관(Yarat Contemporary Art Space, Baku, 2019), 멕시코 시티 아구스티나 페레이라 갤러리(Galeria Agustina Ferreyra, Mexity City, 2018), 런던 유니온 퍼시픽(Union Pacific, London, 2018), 런던 펌프 하우스 갤러리(Pump House Gallery, London, 2017) 등 유수의 기관에서 개인전을 이어왔다.
2019년 제이디 차는 제58회 베니스 비엔날레에서 랄프 루고프(Ralph Rugoff)와 아론 세자르(Aaron Cezar)가 기획한 공연 프로그램에 초청받아 참여했다. 사우스뱅크 센터(Southbank Centre, 2018, 헤이워드 갤러리(Hayward Gallery) 커미션 공연), 파리 팔레 드 도쿄(Palais de Tokyo, Paris, 2018), 런던 서펀타인 갤러리(Serpentine Gallery, London, 2016)에 이어 최근에는 런던 네셔널 갤러리(The National Gallery, 2021, 프리애시 미스트리가 기획한 베니토 마요르 발레호와의 콜라보 공연), 글라스고 트램웨이(Tramway, Glasglow, 2019)에서 퍼포먼스를 선보인 바 있다. 제이디의 작품은 덴마크 코펜하겐 컨템포러리(Copenhagen Contemporary, Denmark, 2023), 로스앤젤레스 ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts, Los Angeles, 2022), 로마 현대미술관(Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Roma, Vencouver, 2022), 뮌헨 하우스데쿤스트(Haus der Kunst, Munich, 2021), 노스밴쿠버 폴리곤 갤러리(The Polygon Gallery, North Vancouver, 2021), 브리스톨 아르놀피니 (Arnolfini, Bristol, 2019) , 뉴욕현대미술관 PS1 (MoMA PS1, New York, 2018) 등 다수의 세계적인 기관에서 진행했던 단체전을 통해 소개되었다. 작가는 2022년 제주 비엔날레, 2021년 제13회 상하이 비엔날레에 참여하였고, 작가의 작품은 아트 카운실, 브리티시 카운실, CRC 파운데이션에 소장되어 있다.
