정희민은 디지털 이미지를 회화와 조각으로 변환하며 물질의 잠재성을 탐구한다. 작가는 기술이 어떻게 동시대적 지각 방식을 결정하며 또 미술에 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 추적하고, 더 나아가 그것의 사회적 역할에 대해 고민한다. 다양한 예술적 실험을 통해 작품에 질감과 부피를 더하며 매체의 질료성을 연구하는 작가는 풍경화와 정물화를 비롯한 전통적 회화 장르를 그만의 시적, 시각적 은유가 내포된 작품으로 재해석한다. 작가는 자신의 작업을 정통 회화 기법의 연장선상에 위치시키며, “회화는 긴 역사성을 고려할 때 우리가 보고 지각하는 방식의 변화를 감지하는 데에 용이한 매체이다. 그래서 매력적인 매체”라고 덧붙인다.
작가는 온라인에서 찾은 이미지들과 디지털 모델링 소프트웨어를 활용해 입체적인 스케치를 제작하고 인쇄한 후, 투명한 겔 미디엄을 통해 물질화하며 막을 형성한다. 작가는 “잉크젯을 수공적인 과정을 통해 아크릴 바디로 전사하거나, 표면의 요철로 인해 디테일이 사라지고 계조만이 남도록 하는 방식의 인쇄를 지속적으로 시도하고 있다”고 설명했다. 이러한 물질들은 구겨지거나 꼬집히며 캔버스 또는 철제 구조 위에 걸쳐지고 흘러내리며 본래 디지털로 고안된 오브제에 대한 공명으로써 캔버스 위에 자리한다. 이로써 작가는 정물화라는 관습적 회화 장르를 재구성하기에 이른다.
정희민은 한국에서 태어나 서울을 기반으로 거주 및 활동하고 있으며, 2015년에 홍익대학교 회화과 학사와 한국예술종합학교 조형예술과 전문사를 졸업했다. 작가는 두산아트센터 (서울, 2023), 신도문화공간 (서울, 2022), 뮤지엄헤드 (서울, 2021), 프로젝트스페이스 사루비아다방 (서울, 2016)에서 개인전을 선보였다. 이외에도 웨스 (서울, 2023), 서울 시립 남서울미술관 (서울, 2021), 을지아트센터 (서울, 2021), 수림아트센터 (2020), 경기도미술관 (안산, 2020), 레인보우큐브 (서울, 2020), 플랫폼 엘 (서울, 2019), 보안1942 (서울, 2019), 과천 국립현대미술관 (과천, 2019), 하이트컬렉션 (서울, 2018), 주홍콩한국문화원 (홍콩, 2018), 아카이브 봄 (서울, 2017) 등 국내외 유수의 기관에서 개최된 단체전에 참여한 바 있다.
2022년 부산비엔날레에서 작품을 선보인 정희민은 같은 해 제 13회 두산연강예술상 수상자로 선정되었고, 이듬해 두산아트센터(서울, 2023)에서 개인전을 선보였다. 작가는 서울시립미술관 난지미술창작스튜디오 (서울, 2022), 신도 작가지원 프로그램 (서울, 2020), 국립현대미술관 고양 레지던시 (고양, 2020) 등 다양한 작가 레지던시 프로그램에 참여하며 지속적인 발전을 이루었고, 그의 작품은 현재 국립현대미술관 미술은행, 서울시립미술관 금호 미술관 등 유수의 기관에 소장되어 있다.
