메간 루니(Megan Rooney, 1985년 남아프리카공화국 출생)는 회화, 설치, 퍼포먼스를 포함한 다양한 매체를 유기적으로 아우르며 작업하는 작가이다. 루니의 회화는 반복적이고 순환적인 과정을 거쳐 전개되며, 본능적으로 구축한 제스처와 색채의 축적을 다시 사포로 샌딩하는 과정을 통해 발전한다. 이 작품들은 작가 주변 환경의 흔적은 물론 그녀 자신의 내면 풍경까지 포용하는 시공간의 캡슐, 즉 내러티브의 응축체가 된다. 종종 대규모로 펼쳐지는 루니의 회화 작업은 단순히 레이어를 덧입히는 과정을 넘어, 캔버스 표면에 묻혀 있던 시간과 흔적을 다시 불러내는 '회수(retrieval)'의 과정이기도 하다. 이러한 회수는 작가와 캔버스 간의 물리적 교환을 통해 이루어지며, 깊이 묻혀 있던 형태들을 조심스럽게 드러내거나 표면으로 이끌어내기 위한 끊임없는 씨름과 같다. 최근 주요 미술관 개인전으로는 《Echoes & Hours》(Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge, 2024); 《HUSH SKY MURMUR HOLE》(Museum of Contemporary Art, Toronto, 2020); 《Green, I Want You Green》(Salzburger Kunstverein, Salzburg, 2020–21); 《Fire On The Mountain》(Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, 2019) 등이 있다. 또한, 2025년 에스파스 루이비통 베이징, 중국에서 개최된 《Joan Mitchell / Megan Rooney: PAINTING FROM NATURE》에서도 자신의 작품을 선보였다. 작가의 작품은 파리 루이비통 재단(Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris), 런던 아트 카운슬 컬렉션(The Arts Council Collection, London), 치체스터 팔란트 하우스 갤러리(Pallant House Gallery, Chichester), 마이애미 현대미술연구소(Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami), 볼티모어 미술관(Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore), 오클랜드 미술관(Ackland Museum of Art, Chapel Hill), 바르샤바 현대미술관(Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw) 등을 포함하여 전 세계 공공 및 개인 컬렉션에 소장되어 있다. 루니는 현재 런던, 영국에서 거주하며 작업하고 있다.
