낫 비탈(Not Vital)의 예술 세계는 그가 전 세계를 유랑하며 각 지역의 거주환경, 자연, 동물, 조각과 건축의 관계 등을 탐구한 결과물과 경험에 근거한다. 추상과 구상적 형식의 경계를 탐구하는 그의 작업은 석고, 강철, 대리석, 세라믹 외 유기적 물질을 포함한 재료를 주된 매체로 삼는다. 그는 베이징의 제철 업자부터 무라노의 유리공예가, 투아레그의 은세공인, 부탄의 제지 업자에 이르기까지 전 세계의 다양한 장인들과 협업을 지속해왔다. 선택된 재료의 본질적인 특성에 대한 타고난 이해와 작가 특유의 물리적인 접근 방식은 시각적으로 과감한 작업으로 이어지며, 결과물의 압도적인 규모와 존재감으로 인해 기존 질서를 와해시키는 것이 특징적이다.
2009년 작가는 그의 최근 대형 설치작업을 보다 명확하게 정의하기 위해 조각과 건축의 융합적인 개념인 'SCARCH'라는 용어를 생성하기에 이른다. 이처럼 그의 작업은 가정과 직장의 공간적, 경제적, 문화적 맥락에 대한 탐구를 축으로 삼는다. 유년 시절부터 지속해 온 보호소 혹은 주거지에 대한 관심을 기반으로 지역사회와의 통합 지향적인 반응형 주거지를 짓기도 하였다. 자연의 리듬과 밀접하게 연결된 á일몰 감상을 위한 주택(Houses to Watch the Sunset)ñ은 '꿈으로의 초대'라는 메시지를 내포하며, 동시에 주변 환경의 특성을 반영하며 지역 주민들에게 일거리를 제공하였다. 작가의 타 작업에서도 두드러지는 엄격한 형식적 완성도와 미니멀리즘 미학을 강조한 이 작업은 그야말로 '보여지는 것 그대로이자 그 자체로 완벽한 [형태], 즉 단 하나의 가감으로도 무너질 수 있는 완전한 상태’를 자아낸다.
1948년 스위스 센트(Sent) 출생인 낫 비탈은 센트, 베이징, 리우데자네이루에서 거주하며 작업하고 있다. 스위스, 오스트리아, 이탈리아 국경 근처의 엥가딘(Engadin) 계곡의 산과 숲에서 자라난 작가는 대부분의 시간을 중국, 니제르, 이탈리아, 인도네시아, 미국을 비롯한 여러 국가에서 생활하였다. 1968년부터 71년까지 파리의 뱅센느 대학교(Université Expérimentale de Vincennes)에서 시각 예술을 공부하였으며, 1974년 뉴욕으로 이주하여 본격적으로 작업 활동을 시작했다. 2003년 낫 비탈은 엥가딘 지역의 유서 깊은 작은 마을인 아르데즈(Ardez)에 조각 공원을 설립하고 지역 문화 보호를 추진하기 위한 재단을 설립하였다. 또한 2009년 제작된 칠레 파타고니아 낫오나(NotOna) 섬의 <NotOna Tunnel> 외 사색을 위한 건축물을 전 세계에 설립한 바 있다.
낫 비탈의 작업은 헤럴드 제만(Harald Szeemann)이 기획한 제49회 베니스 비엔날레(2001)를 비롯한 유수의 전시에서 소개되었다. 주요 개인전이 개최된 기관으로는 쿤스트할레 빌레펠트(Kunsthalle Bielefeld, 2005), 시카고 아트 클럽(Arts Club of Chicago, 2006), 베이징 UCCA 현대미술센터(UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, 2011), 멘드리시오 미술관(Museo d'arte Mendrisio, 2014-15) 등이 있다. 2013년에는 베네치아의 산 조르지오 마조레(San Giorgio Maggiore) 섬에서 대규모 설치 작업 á700개의 눈덩이(700 Snowballs)ñ를 선보였다. 2016년 요크셔 조각 공원(Yorkshire Sculpture Park)에서 개최된 낫 비탈의 첫 영국 전시는 작가가 현재까지 진행한 가장 큰 규모의 미술관 프로젝트로 손꼽힌다. 한편 2020-21년에는 잘츠부르크 현대미술관(Museum der Moderne)에서 첫 오스트리아 미술관 전시를 선보였다.
