인도 콜카타에서 태어나 카슈미르에서 자란 라킵 쇼(Raqib Shaw)는 상인 가족을 둔 덕분에 골동품과 보석, 이국적인 직물과 카펫을 자주 접하며 성장했으며, 이러한 유년기 경험은 이후 매우 복잡하고 밝게 채색된 회화를 제작하는 데 영향을 미쳤다. 작가는 기어 다니는 원숭이 왕과 가죽끈으로 묶인 켄타우로스, 무시무시한 호랑이 머리를 하고 얼룩말을 타고 있는 전사들로 가득한 비현실적인 영역에서의 화려한 환상을 만들어 낸다. 그가 묘사한 세계는 아름답고, 끔찍하며, 타락하고, 호화스럽거나 신화에 기반을 두고 있으며, 환상적인 이미지와 섬세한 그의 기술 사이에서 스릴 넘치는 시너지를 발휘한다.
자작나무 패널과 종이를 지지체로 한 회화와 청동 조각은 대부분 동서양의 신화와 미술사 속 명화에서 영감을 얻은 것이다. 작가는 이러한 레퍼런스를 통해 작품 구성 또는 서사의 틀을 마련하고, 모조 다이아몬드와 반짝이, 에나멜 등 특이한 재료를 사용하여 자신만의 독특한 시각적 어휘를 더한다. 또한 정교한 기술로 인물과 카펫, 의상, 신화적 풍경을 그리고, 금속과 도자기 장식을 위해 고대부터 사용된 칠보 기법을 연상시키는, 정성과 노력이 필요한 방식을 활용한다.
작가는 종종 자신의 회화에 등장하는데, 일반적으로 주변 행동과 구분된다. 구체적으로 그는 바닥이나 침대에 앉아 물웅덩이와 거울, 또는 지도를 응시하는 모습으로 묘사되며, 이는 마치 세상의 시름에 잠긴 시인이나 마음속 환영의 힘에 매료된 예술가처럼 보인다. 한 예로 <Self-portrait in the Study at Peckham (A Reverie after Antonello da Messina’s Saint Jerome)>(2014)은 작가가 15세기 화가의 작품을 악마의 해골과 유령, 총천연색의 파충류 같은 원숭이, 반짝이는 보름달, 머리를 뒤로 젖힌 채 낄낄대는 중심인물로 가득한 광기 어린 환상으로 재해석했으며, 여기에 등장하는 인물은 파란 얼굴에 꽃무늬 가운을 입은 자신을 묘사한 것이다. 그의 작품이 지닌 매력 중 하나는 이러한 매혹적이고 신비로운 세계를 즐길 것인지 혹은 거부할 것인지에 있다.
쇼는 1992년부터 지금까지 런던 남부의 페컴에 스튜디오를 차려 거주하고 작업 중이며, 1998년 센트럴 세인트 마틴(Central St Martins)에 입학하여 2002년 석사 학위를 받았다. 졸업 직후, 스코틀랜드 국립 현대미술관(Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, 2018)과 휘트워스(Whitworth, Manchester, 2017), 루돌피니움(Rudolfinium, Prague, 2013), 맨체스터 미술관(Manchester Art Gallery, Manchester, 2013), 메트로폴리탄 미술관(The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2008), 노스 마이애미 현대미술관(Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, North Miami, 2006), 테이트 브리튼(Tate Britain, London, 2006) 등 다수의 전시 기관에서 주요 개인전을 가졌다.
