비야네 멜고르(Bjarne Melgaard)는 1990년대 중반부터 신고전주의적이고 제스처적인 회화 양식을 발전시켜왔으며, 사회에 도발적이고 비판적인 질문을 제기하기 위해 종종 주변적이고 하위문화의 현상들을 다룬다. 멜고르는 자기 파괴적인 경향과 일탈적인 성행위 또는 비주류적인 종교 신념 등 인류의 어두운 면을 탐구하고, 사회적, 정치적, 이념적 문제를 고찰하기 위해 수용의 한계를 뛰어넘는다. 그만의 독특한 도상학은 북유럽 신화 뿐 아니라 영화 《핑크 팬더》와 《혹성탈출》, 상징주의 화가인 에드바르트 뭉크(Edvard Munch)와 작가 엘리자베스 워첼(Elizabeth Wurtzel) 등 대중문화와 다양한 자료들을 참고한다. 여러 분야와 매체를 오가는 그의 작품은 회화와 조각, 설치, 패션, 문학, 건축, 전시 기획, 비디오, 증강현실(AR), 가상현실(VR)을 망라한다.
멜고르의 표현력 있고 강렬하게 채색된 캔버스는 밝고 종종 단색을 배경으로 유화 물감을 두껍게 쌓아 올려 묘사한 혼종적인 사람과 동물 캐릭터로 가득하다. 이 중 다수의 작품은 노르웨이어 또는 영어로 적힌 문구가 함께 그려져 있어 이미지와 대조적이다. 이는 작가가 지속해서 탐구했던, 불안이 감도는 소란스러운 축제로서 궁극적인 ‘남성성의 포용’을 표현한 ‘개인적 원형’이 담긴 자기성찰적 작품으로 귀결된다. 자신을 뚜렷한 정치적인 예술가로 여기지 않지만, 그의 작품은 1970-80년대부터 퀴어 정치 및 정체성과의 공감대를 기반으로 한다. 또한 노르웨이에서 뭉크의 영향으로 성과 욕망, 소외, 죽음 등을 포함한 심오한 주제를 다루면서, 이를 자신만의 독특한 관용구로 변형했다.
멜고르는 시드니에서 노르웨이인 부모 사이에서 태어났으며, 이후 오슬로에서 성장하여 노르웨이 국립 미술 대학교(Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts)를 다녔다. 이후 1991년 네덜란드로 이주하여 라익스 아카데미(Rijksakademie, Amsterdam)와 얀 반 에이크 아카데미(Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht)에서 학업을 마쳤으며, 10년간 뉴욕을 기반으로 활동하다 2017년 다시 오슬로로 돌아왔다. 작가는 54회 베니스 비엔날레(Venice Biennale, 2011)에서 노르웨이 국가관 대표작가로 전시한 바 있으며, 리옹 비엔날레(Lyon Biennale, 2000, 2013), 휘트니 비엔날레(Whitney Biennial, 2014)에 참여했다. 아스트루프 펀리 현대미술관(Astrup Fearnley Museum, Oslo, 2010)에서 중견 회고전을 가졌고, 뭉크 미술관에서의 기획전 《Melgaard + Munch – The End Of It All Has Already Happened》에서 뭉크의 작품과 직접적으로 대면했다. 이듬해 출판사 스키라 리졸리(Skira Rizzoli)는 멜고르의 경력을 포괄적으로 다룬 단행본을 출판했다. 그의 또 다른 책 《A New Novel》(2012)은 출판사 아스케하우그(Aschehoug)가 출간한 최초의 영어 소설이었으며, 최근에 책 《De Etterlatte》(2021)가 출간되었다. 작가는 2019년 줄리아 슈토쉑 갤러리(Julia Stoschek Foundation)에서 어큐트 아트(Acute Art)와 함께 첫 가상현실 작품인 <My Trip>을 선보였다. 또한 2022년에 음악가이자 작가인 크리스 코다(Chris Korda)와 스타이프(Steiff)와 협업하여 스타방에르 미술관(Kunsthall Stavanger, Stavanger) 전시에서 장난감 컬렉션을 제작하고, 여기에 코다의 회고전도 포함하였다. 2023년 오슬로의 뭉크 미술관에서의 회고전은 그의 작품을 총망라하는 고국의 공공 전시기관에서의 첫 번째 전시다.
