조나단 라스커(Jonathan Lasker)는 1970년대 이후 구조적인 격자 무늬와 선명하게 휘갈겨 그린 선, 두껍게 칠한 물감 등 흔적을 만드는 다양한 과정을 바탕으로 독특한 형식적 어휘를 발전시켰다. 작가가 이러한 형식을 직관적으로 만듦에도 불구하고, 구성 자체는 고도로 구조화되어 있고 통제되어 있다. 그는 회화의 평면을 비운 미니멀리즘과 개념미술 이후, 다시 회화의 가능성을 재정립하려는 최전선의 작가들처럼 형상과 배경이 서로 변증법적으로 엮인 형상-배경 관계를 기반으로 한 독특한 회화체계를 만들어 매체의 현상유지에 도전했다.
작가는 중첩되고, 전치되고, 변형된 형태를 사용하여 뚜렷하고 선명하게 윤곽이 드러난 요소로 구성된 회화를 제작했다. 미술평론가 리처드 칼리나(Richard Kalina)는 그의 작업에 대해 ‘라스커의 작업에서 형태는 […]큰 계획의 일부이지만, 형태와 색상, 텍스처, 물감을 사용하는 방식에서 본다면 독립적이기도 하다. (그림에서) 각각의 이미지는 검토되고, 경험되고, 분류되어야 하는 요인이자 라스커가 만든 더 큰 기하학적 구조에서 구성 요소, 그 자체가 된다.’고 설명한다. 형태로 구성된 그림은 관람객을 캔버스 위에 그려진 다양한 추상적인 형상들과 이들의 관계에 능동적으로 참여하도록 함으로써 즉물적이기 보다 해석적으로 다가온다. 관람객은 관람 행위를 통해 스스로 경험하도록 고무되며, 결국에 라스커 회화의 대상이 된다.
라스커는 1948년 뉴저지 주의 저지 시티에서 태어났으며 현재 뉴욕을 기반으로 활동 중이다. 작가는 뉴욕 미술대학교(School of Visual Arts)와 발렌시아에 위치한 캘리포니아 예술대학교(California Institute of the Arts)를 다녔으며, 입학 전에 록(rock) 뮤지션이 되고자 했다. 초기 개인전은 1992년 필라델피아에 위치한 ICA에서 있었으며, 회고전은 독일 빌레펠트 미술관(Kunsthalle Bielefeld, Bielefeld)과 암스테르담 시립미술관(Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam), 장트갈렌 예술조합(Kunstverein St. Gallen, St. Gallen,1997–98)을 순회했고, 뒤이어 브랜다이스 대학교(Brandeis University)의 로즈 미술관(Rose Art Museum, Walthamm)과 현대미술 포럼(Forum for Contemporary Art, St. Louis), 토론토의 더 파워 플랜트(The Power Plant, Toronto)에서 작품이 전시되었다. 주요 회고전은 2003년 마드리드의 레이나 소피아 국립미술관(Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid)과 K21(Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf)에서 있었으며, 2015년 생테티엔 미술관(the Musée d'art moderne et contemporain in Saint-Étienne)에서 《Jonathan Lasker: Paintings 2001–2014》전을 선보였다.
