드로잉과 사진, 퍼포먼스, 영화, 설치를 넘나들며 작업 중인 마크 브랜든버그(Marc Brandenburg)는1990년대 독특한 흑연 드로잉으로 처음으로 인지도를 얻기 시작했다. 브랜든버그는 베를린과 바르셀로나를 오랫동안 산책하면서 찍은 사진으로 작업하며, 세심한 연필 드로잉으로 인물과 일부분을 주변 환경에서 분리하여 마치 네거티브 사진처럼 빛과 어두운 색조를 반전시킨다. 마약 구매자와 거리 예술가, 노숙자, 시위 참여자 또는 축구 팬 등이 고립되고 정지된 순간에 놓인 듯이 묘사한 그의 작품은 영구적인 상태에서 순간적인 장면들을 고정시킨다.
올리버 쾨너 폰 구스토프(Oliver Koerner von Gustorf)는 브랜든버그에 대해, ‘2000년대부터 이 베를린 예술가는 훌리건, 시위에 참여 중인 광대, 노숙자, 정신질환자 등 사회적 규범에서 벗어난 역할과 신체, 의상, 의식적 이미지에 관심을 가졌다’고 설명한다. 뒤이어 ‘브랜든버그의 반전된 흑백 드로잉은 사람들이 점점 더 사회적으로 고립되고 정신질환이나 중독에 시달리는 망가진, 폭력적인 사회상을 주제로 삼았다. 또한 사람이 의상과 변장, 또는 임시 거주지에 잘 어울릴 때와 같이 내면과 외면의 상태가 합쳐지는 그 순간에 관심을 가졌다’고 언급했다.
브랜든버그는 영화와 문학, 20세기 중반 도시문화와 행동주의, 사회적 차별 등 다양한 출처를 활용하여 비순응과 차이, 고립이라는 주제를 고찰한다. 그의 전시 방식도 자외선을 사용하는 등 매우 새로웠으며, 관람객에게 기이한 빛에 의해 강조되는 총체적인 경험을 제공한다. 동시에 빛과 어둠의 반전은 기존 규범을 부정하고 자본주의 체제에 부적합한 개인을 소외시키는 사회적 가치의 전복에 대한 은유가 된다.
베를린에서 태어나 현재까지 거주 중인 브랜든버그는 미국 텍사스와 독일에서 성장했다. 2019년 지아니 제처(Gianni Jetzer)가 기획한 아트 바젤(Art Basel)의 《Unlimited》에 참여했으며, 2021년 팔레 포풀레어(PalaisPopulaire, Berlin)에서 회고전이 있었다. 그 외에도 쿤스트라움 포츠담(Kunstraum Potsdam, 2018), 슈타데 미술관(Museen Stade, 2015), 볼프스부르크 시립 미술관(Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg, 2012), 함부르크 쿤스트할레(Hamburger Kunsthalle, 2011), 덴버 미술관(Denver Art Museum, 2010)에서 개인전을 선보였다. 뿐만 아니라 팔레 포풀레어(2018)와 프라하 루돌피눔(Rudolfinum, Prague, 2016), 쿤스트할레 브레멘(Kunsthalle Bremen, 2015), 모스코 현대미술관(Moscow Museum of Modern Art, 2014), ZKM (Zentrum für Kunst und Medien, Karlsruhe, 2013), 할렘 스튜디오 미술관(The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, 2011), 그로피우스 바우(Gropius Bau, Berlin, 2011) 등 다수의 그룹전에 참여한 바 있다.
