Neues Museum presents four works by the duo under the title Gilbert & George. Fuckosophy. This is actually a reunion, since the two artists made a high-profile appearance at Kunsthalle Nürnberg in 1970 as The Singing Sculptures. As there is no document of this event, Gilbert & George selected a film made in 1991 at Sonnabend Gallery in New York that shows the performance much as it took place twenty years earlier in Nuremberg at the opening of the exhibition Das Ding als Objekt. Europäische Objektkunst des 20. Jahrhunderts. By declaring themselves to be sculptures, they made an important contribution to expanding the definition of sculpture. Fuckosophy for All was chosen as the title for this exhibition at Neues Museum. On two walls, wallpaper printed in black and red features hundreds of versions of the F-word. For Gilbert & George, this tirade is a “great experiment in literature”. They see fuckosophy as a “kind of utopia where you can say whatever you want.” Compared with philosophy, fuckosophy is “more democratic,” they stress, “more art for everyone.”

“THE BEARD PICTURES are violent, eerie, grotesque, lurid and crazed. They show a dream-like world of paranoia and destruction and madness.
Gilbert & George take their places within the BEARD PICTURES as intense, red, staring, empty-headed and sinister versions of themselves. Their eyes are shadowed and bizarrely prettified. Mutant impish explorers or dead-headed sentinels, they seem to look at, into and through the viewer. They look possessed and serious. They look as though their spirits might have left their bodies. They look stern, absurd, imprisoned, mocking and mocked. In each picture they wear beards that are surreal and symbolic. Beards made of wire mesh, beards made of beer foam, beards made of flowers, beards comprising rabbits with snakes for tongues. Secular and sacred, the throwback emblem of hip millennial youth as well as a mark of religious faith, the beard is depicted in THE BEARD PICTURES as both mask and meaning: a sign of the times.“

Working together for nearly 50 years now, the artist duo originally gained world fame with their hand-painted photo-based artworks. Their art practice blurs the boundaries of private life and creative life, and most often the protagonists of their works are themselves, their main theme being modern-day urban existence. The series Scapegoating Pictures represents a fast, ever so technology-based, multicultural world, in which paranoia, fundamentalism, religion, and victimized existence emerge.

In a presentation designed by the artists, NMNM presents a major exhibition looking back on more than 40 years of Gilbert & George’s art.
The exhibition will allow visitors to experience an art that is both deeply rooted in our own constantly changing society, while also comprising a world of its own—an intense, frightening, lonely, loving, abject, joyous, struggling, defiant, crazed, still, contemplative, vertiginous, desiring, modern world.
Gathering 46 works selected from the collection of a family based in Monaco, this unique exhibition looks at the notion of the "built" landscape as subject to analysis and interpretation, a theme repeatedly addressed by the NMNM.
