A riot of vermilion, pinks and magenta, Ohne Titel (2019) represents the corporeal register of Martha Jungwirth’s distinctive colour palette. The paint is applied in fluid sweeps and daubed onto the surface of the paper in gestural blots, serving as a record of her dynamic bodily presence in the creative act. The swathes of paint are gathered towards the centre of the work to form a dense passage of pigmented material around which areas of the brown paper are left exposed, balancing the composition with a delicate sensitivity and restraint.
Martha Jungwirth’s singular contribution to contemporary painting is currently being celebrated with a career retrospective at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf until 20 November 2022.
