As part of a large cycle of solo shows highlighting artists in the Mudam Collection, this exhibition offers the public a chance to discover the oeuvre of one of the most important contemporary sculptors.
Since his early days in the 1970s, the work of the English sculptor Tony Cragg has been constantly charting new ground. His early works consisted mainly of found objects, which he arranged on the basis of their particular features, materials, colours, and dimensions.
He thus set up a busy dialogue with matter, which constitutes the main thrust of his entire oeuvre. “I believe that material is everything,” he explains. Whether his sculptures are made of wood, glass, plastic or bronze, they associate the particular qualities of a material with the vitality of a form. Cragg’s inventiveness, and his inclination to create forms that are as complex as they are elegant, stem from this combination.
