The Austrian artist's work has been associated with the Neo-Geo movement, also known as the new geometricism, which arose in the early 1980 and championed a turn toward geometric abstraction and rationality in art. Rockenschaub’s expansive installations—prominent presentations have included the Austrian pavilion at the 1993 Venice Biennale and a show at the Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig, Vienna, in 2005—read as minimalist objects while also drawing attention to the conditions shaping the display of contemporary art. The animations, foil pictures, and objects engage their settings in a playful dialogue; using acrylic glass surfaces, the artist always integrates the viewers’ reflections into the ensembles. Rockenschaub himself has described it as “funky minimalism,” a term that also gestures toward his background in music and the sampling of artistic genres.
