• Duh? Art & Stupidity
    November 10, 2015 - March 26, 2016
    Focal Point Gallery
    Essex, England

Duh? Art & Stupidity is a group exhibition featuring existing and previously unseen works by artists including Tariq Alvi, BANK, Bonnie Camplin, Cecilia Condit, Ryan Gander, Isa Genzken, Judith Hopf, Larry Johnson, Erik van Lieshout, Annika Ström, Sturtevant, Rosemarie Trockel, Tomi Ungerer and Andy Warhol amongst others.

The exhibition looks at stupidity as a subject and a tactic of art making, with a particular focus on its relationship to the politics and performance of identity. High culture is meant to keep its audience from being stupid, but artists have repeatedly drawn upon stupidity, or playing stupid, as a form of dissidence, irreverence or as a means to cast off received thinking.

To work from a position of stupidity would appear to be a good way to counter knowingness and intellectual superiority, but how can artists adopt stupidity as a strategy without turning it into cleverness? Even if you don't play stupid, how do you write about stupidity without declaring yourself to be smart? If there are forms of intellectualism that, through being inflexible and unresponsive, appear stupid, then what exactly is stupidity anyway?

Duh? Art & Stupidity is curated by Paul Clinton and Anna Gritz.

  • The House of Horrors
    May 29, 2015 - May 15, 2016
Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris, France

The Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris pays tribute to Sturtevant by presenting her monumental work The House of Horrors for one year beginning on 29 May 2015.

The House of Horrors, a life-size ghost train where visitors can ride in carts,

is the last major installation of Sturtevant. The donation made by the artist complements the permanent collections of the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris

With The House of Horrors Sturtevant wanted to create an installation in which figures of contemporary art history like The Painter, McCarthy or Divine would be seen amongst bats, Frankenstein and other well known monsters.

Spanning across 300m2, House of Horrors explores the excess of our contemporary era dominated by entertainment, violence and anti-intellectualism. Sturtevant accompanies visitors through a series of experiences of fear connected to each other in an amusing way.
